What is Lead?

Lead is a toxic material found in our environment. It can be found in dust and soil, water, air, and in residential and commercial products such as paint. The government banned the use of lead-based paint in 1978.

Lead Poisoning?

Lead, at certain exposure levels, is a poisonous substance for human beings as it damages the nervous system and causes brain disorders. Excessive lead exposure also causes blood disorders. Lead is a neurotoxin that accumulates both in soft tissues and the bones. Lead poisoning has been documented from ancient Rome, ancient Greece, and ancient China.

Where is Lead Found?

A common source of lead poisoning is deteriorating lead-based paint, along with the resulting paint chips and dust, washed into the soil from rain running down the side of a painted house or commercial facility, or by opening and closing a painted window, is a common source of lead poisoning. All buildings built before 1978 are suspect for lead-based paint, as are the resulting paint chips and dust, which can cause serious health problems if not addressed immediately.

Beginning April 22, 2010, federal law required that contractors performing renovation, repair and painting projects that disturb more than six square feet of paint in homes, child care facilities, and schools built before 1978 must be trained, certified and meet all Lead Safe Work Practices to prevent lead-based paint dust contamination.
