A common source of lead poisoning is deteriorating lead-based paint, along with the resulting paint chips and dust, washed into the soil from rain running down the side of a painted house or commercial facility, or by opening and closing a painted window, is a common source of lead poisoning. All buildings built before 1978 are suspect for lead-based paint, as are the resulting paint chips and dust, which can cause serious health problems if not addressed immediately.
Beginning April 22, 2010, federal law required that contractors performing renovation, repair and painting projects that disturb more than six square feet of paint in homes, child care facilities, and schools built before 1978 must be trained, certified and meet all Lead Safe Work Practices to prevent lead-based paint dust contamination.
